The Archdiocese of Philadelphia joins millions of Catholics in praying for China this weekend.

Father Tom Betz of Holy Redeemer Chinese Catholic Church in Chinatown says Pope Benedict XVI declared May 24th as World Prayer Day for China. And in light of recent natural disasters he says the need is greater than ever before:

“It seems almost amazing that the Pope had scheduled this date for that prayer for China. Obviously we're praying for religious freedom there. People are still jailed. People are still harassed but I think a lot of our prayers now are going to be for the many victims of this horrible earthquake.”

And Father Betz says anyone can help:

“At Holy Redeemer we're going to channel our aid through the Diocese of Hong Kong and our web site www.holyredeemer.cc.”
